Sue Surface is a creative and dedicated art teacher having had nearly 40 years of teaching background.  She focused mainly in the elementary classroom with an emphasis in language arts, which grew into a passion for the visual arts.  This excitement stemmed from a time in the mid-90’s when she was introduced to the rich artwork inherent in Caldecott-award children’s literature.  Sue still integrates the visual and printed word, having discovered her creative style during those years teaching her young students--both in academics and in seeing with an artist’s eye.As a little girl she had a natural connection to children.   She grew up as the second oldest of six siblings.  With her older brother and two younger sisters she would explore the world outside, creating stories and dreaming up fantasy scenarios of trees, the night sky, grass and landscape around her home.  As she grew, these interactions with family and friends, and authentic younger minds deepened her enjoyment of knowing her world.  Life became a time of creative exploration alongside young minds and eventually led to a career in engaging  children as an elementary school teacher.  That career opened wide her own creativity and passion for art.   Now retiring from 40 years as an educator, Sue is focused on children and art.

Facilitating Art Experiences through the use of Award-Winning Children's Books

I use a creative approach to guiding students to see elements of art inherent in the illustrations of the finest children's literature.  Using our artist's eye, we discover ways to feature those elements in an artwork of our own.  Where the journey takes us is an adventure of self-expression and enlightenment!

It is my goal to foster a growing motivation for exploring books--their stories, art and illustrations, and enjoy working on a project in a fun, supportive and non-judgmental environment.
